“No, it’s not a date. He’s just been texting me like crazy and, I don’t know, I feel like maybe I might’ve led him on and given him the wrong impression. . . . Because I don’t want to date him. Oh, stop. . . . Because I’m not a big slut like you. I know he’s sweet and handsome and well-mannered and everything that any sane woman would want in a man but . . . it’s just . . . he’s boring. Haven’t I told you all this already? . . . Are you eating? . . . Because you chew like a horse and all that crunching in my ear is distracting. . . . Stop calling it a date. . . . Because he deserves an explanation. Besides, I’ve been locked up in this house for three days, and I could really use the fresh air. . . . It’s hard to explain. . . . Okay, I can’t tell you. How’s that? . . . Whatever. . . . Tonight. I’m meeting him at that new restaurant on the corner of Ashbery and Bloom. I think it’s French. . . . That’s why I need to talk to him. . . . I don’t know, nothing too revealing. I don’t wanna send the wrong vibes. . . . For the hundredth time—it’s not a date.”

“What’s not a date?”

“Shit, I gotta go. I’ll call you tomorrow. Oh, shut up. Bye.”

“Heyy . . . how long you been standing there?”

“Long enough to know what restaurant you won’t be going to tonight.”

“Oh, come on. If you know the restaurant, then you know it’s not even ten minutes away. I won’t be there more than thirty minutes.”

“Who?”

“Who what?”

“Who’re you supposed to meet there?”

“It’s just a friendly chat. That’s all.”

“Who? . . . Don’t roll your eyes at me. You know it’s not safe for you to leave the house. So who is so important that you feel the need to risk your life to go see?”

“It’s just . . . it’s not what you think. I only need to talk to him for a few minutes.”

“Sanders? . . . I knew it. You want to risk your life to go on a date with Sanders? No. Absolutely not.”

“It’s not a date. God. Why doesn’t anybody believe that?”

“Because he’s a smarmy little douche who you’ve already gone on a date with—and kissed. Yeah, I know about the kiss. He told the entire building about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wrote your names in a heart on a bathroom wall.”

“That’s ridiculous. And it was one kiss. Not a big deal. And anyway, I regretted it immediately.”

“Why?”

“Because I . . . just because. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to get ready for my non-date.”

“No.”

“I just have to explain to him that I’m not interested. That’s it. I don’t want to do it on the phone because it’s rude not to break bad news to somebody’s face. Ugh. Will you move?”

“No.
